Shaibu Yakubu hits back at Asamoah Gyan for claiming he could have won GPL goal king

Former striker of Obuasi Goldfields Shaibu Yakubu has responded to claims by Asamoah Gyan that he only won the League’s top scorer award because he (Gyan) was regularly traveling abroad for trials.

Shaibu Yakubu claimed the 2003 Premier league top scorer in his debut season as a 16-year-old for the Miners.

He netted 13 goals to claim the coveted individual prize ahead of Kwadwo Poku (Asante Kotoko) and Asamoah Gyan (Liberty Professionals).

Gyan scored 10 goals in 16 matches that season, 3 fewer than Yakubu who played more games.

He recently stated in an interview with TV3 that he failed to win the GPL topscorer because his schedule was disrupted with regular travels abroad to undergo trials with foreign clubs.

However, Shaibu Yakubu has refuted Gyan’s claims insisting that he deserved the top scorer gong.

He opined that Gyan’s assertions are far fetched since there are no guarantees that he would have scored more goals if he had played more games.

He told FMIG’s Tales from the Past podcast, “for that Gyan can’t be sure and its not guaranteed. Scoring goals is not by saying, for example, going into a game, you cannot just say I will score”.

“Sometimes you can really work hard in training but in the game you will not be lucky to find the goal”.

“So to say that if not I was going for trials and all that I would have won the goal king at that time, I don’t believe what he is saying”.

“Maybe he could have stayed here and he would have played 10 games continuously without scoring”.

“It is what it is, what was supposed to be happen at that time happened”, Yakubu concluded.
