Soccer for Dreamers, a USA-based Non-Governmental Organization, has provided education on menstrual hygiene to young female footballers in Accra.
Sylvia Akwaboah, President of Soccer for Dreamers, led the initiative, stating that the primary aim was to educate young female footballers on menstrual hygiene.
She added that the training was impactful, as evidenced by the young girls' appreciation for the education.
“It’s been a really an impactful day. We managed with the girls to give them a talk on menstrual hygiene; we have given them the menstrual caps; we have given them all the soccer gear that they need and you could tell the level of appreciation just looking at them; especially just hearing about menstrual hygiene because we talked about myths and facts.
"For example, about menstruation and some of the things they didn’t even know. It’s very fulfilling to see that if not anything, we have been here to teach the girls something,” she told GhanaWeb.
The NGO also donated items to 10 teams, marking their third consecutive year of donations and the fourth edition of their initiative.
“This is actually the fourth edition and third year of donations and we have managed to give altogether right here at the GFA (Ghana Football Association), we’ve donated to 10 teams, we have an additional 10 teams that we were not able to bring here but we are going to go into their places of training to give to them,” Sylvia added.
