Sports sector would be developed - Woyongo

Navrongo, [UER] June 18, GNA - The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Mark Woyongo has stated that government is to develop a comprehensive sports Policy and adopt a related legislation to regulate and guide sports development in the country.

He said the Policy would focus on school sports, institutes and infrastructure development across the country. Mr Woyongo said this at the annual Inter-School Athletics and Cross Country Competition at Navrongo, the capital of the Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly.


He stressed that government recognizes that sports has become a big economic undertaking that attracts huge investments and earnings worldwide and would therefore see to its development.

The Regional Minister encouraged the students not to regard sports as merely for leisure or as a hobby but as a source of good health and a profitable vocation, saying, "These days sports men and women are among the wealthiest persons in the world, they earn so much money that our combined annual salary will come no where near theirs". Mr Woyongo asked the athletes to be disciplined and not to engage in anti- social vices like drug usage and abuse and unsafe sex. The competing schools were drawn from all the Senior High schools in the Region.


Prizes were presented to outstanding schools and individuals who performed well.
