Starlets shine at International Peace Tournament

Bakau (The Gambia) July 25, GNA - Ghana's Under-17 National Team, the Black Starlets have scored two straight victories by beating their Malian and Liberian counterparts in a special anniversary tournament, dubbed the "International Peace Match," as part of activities to mark 10 years of development under the leadership of President Yahya Jammeh.

The Starlets won their first match, played against Mali by two-one goals aggregate, at the Independence Stadium at Bakau. The Ghanaians, who progressed from a sluggish start, scored their goals before the Malians managed to get their first and only goal.

Vice President Aliu Mahama, who was in The Gambia to participate in the activities, watched the match with Mr Rashid Bawa, Minister of State for Youth and Sports, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, Minister of Ports, Harbours and Railways, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Akwasi Osei-Adjei and other dignitaries.

In the game against Liberia, played on Saturday, the Starlets scored the lone goal of the match.

They are scheduled to play against Senegal today and the host team, the Gambians in their next match.

Eleven teams, including Liberia, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Tunisia, Senegal, South Africa and Guinea are taking part in the tournament. The match aims at bringing the youth of Africa together to foster friendship and regional collaboration at that level.
