Stars’ progress my focus – Jordan Ayew

Black Stars striker AndreAyew says he is prepared to put in a shift for the side as long that contributes to the team’s progress at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

The young striker was heavily criticised over his performance in the first game against Uganda but stepped up with a gutsy performance against the Eagles of Mali.

He has failed to score in the two games played so far but insists the progress of the team is all that matters.

“I am not really bothered by the fact that I have not been on target yet for the team. Football is a team sport and I am happy to contribute my fair share to the team’s qualification as far the second round stage is concerned,” he told Class Sports’ Kwame Dwomoh at the end of the Ghana-Mali game, which the Black Stars won courtesy a first half header from skipper Asamoah Gyan.

“Gyan has now scored 49 goals for the Stars and I am happy I am playing a part in his history-making feat. Who scores goals at the tournament is not really important. We want to progress as far as we can, which is the ultimate. That is what concerns me.”

Having won their first two games of the competition, the Stars have now qualified for the quarter-finals. They step up to play the Egyptians next Wednesday at the Port Gentil stadium.
