Stephen Appiah recalls how he lost his parents at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

Ghana's former captain, Stephen Appiah, has opened up about the heart-wrenching loss of both his parents at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s premier healthcare facility.

Having grown up in Chorkor under the care of his parents, Appiah tragically lost his father twelve years ago followed by his mother six years later, both due to strokes that needed treatment at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Recalling the ordeal, the former Juventus player expressed shock at the deteriorating conditions he witnessed firsthand during his father's hospitalization.

“12 years ago, my father was diagnosed with a stroke and was sent to Korle-Bu. After visiting him twice, I decided not to go there again because of the situation I encountered there,” Stephen Appiah stated.

Years later, when his mother also suffered a stroke, Appiah hoped for improvement in the hospital’s conditions but to his dismay, issues had worsened.

“My mother also had a stroke 6 years ago, we sent her to the same place. I was thinking by then things would have changed but to my shock, things had worsened,” he recounted.

Stephen Appiah made these statements when he, along with other ex-players, met with Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II to discuss plans for constructing a new health facility at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana's premier healthcare institution.

The meeting took place at Ga Mantse's private residence on Wednesday, July 18, 2024, and was attended by notable ex-Black Stars players such as Stephen Appiah, Derek Boateng, Godwin Attram, Sam Johnson, Emmanuel Armah, and Awuley Quaye Jr.

The ex-players have collaborated with the Ga Traditional Council to commemorate the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s 100th anniversary this year with a new 24-hour pharmacy annex and renovate deteriorating facilities within the hospital.
