Sunyani, (BA) Feb 19, GNA - The Sunyani Coronation Park which has of late become a centre of action for both international and local football derbies is undergoing a facelift to make it more attractive to both patrons and officials of the game.

Works at the stadium were feverishly going on with the stands at the southern side already fixed with new seats while construction works have begun on a new stand at the northern end.

Mr. Francis Opoku Boateng, Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinating Director told the GNA Sports that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) financed the fixing of the 956 sitting capacity stand at the cost of more than 600 million cedis.

He said the Council saw the need to give the stadium a facelift for increased sitting capacity in view of the ongoing renovations at the Ohene Djan and Baba Yara Stadiums at Accra and Kumasi, which has necessitated the hosting of some international and local matches at the Park.

Mr. Boateng said that it is hoped that the facelift of the stadium will enable fans and officials have a conducive atmosphere to relax and watch matches comfortably without being on their feet throughout matches whilst some of the local teams who use the place as their home grounds will consider the venue as a big boost.

He said an additional stand of 2000 sitting capacity to be constructed at a cost of two billion cedis had already begun and the RCC was sourcing funds from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to ensure its early completion.

Meanwhile, work is earnestly going on at the Jubilee Durbar Grounds, which the RCC Director said would be completed by February 28. On the public outcry that the site is too small to receive more people, he explained that the original size had to be reduced because the Ghana Water Company drew attention to one of its main pipelines in the area.

He said the project was the first phase and that the Municipal Assembly would add more stands in the near future. 19 Feb. 07
