TP Mazembe can win Club World Cup - Adjei

The Corbeaux midfielder believes they can become the first African club to win Fifa's Club World Cup title after emerging as continental champions

TP Mazembe Ghanaian midfielder Daniel Nii Adjei believes they can make history by becoming the first club from Africa to win the Fifa Club World Cup in Japan next month.

The DR Congo giants defeated Algerian side USM Algier 4-1 on aggregate to clinch their fifth title in the competition.

They will represent Africa at the 2015 Fifa Club World Cup in Japan from December 10 to 20.

Mazembe became the first African club to reach the final of the competition in 2010, losing 3-0 to Inter Milan.

“It's possible for us to win the Club World Cup looking at the quality of our team,” Adjei told Goal.

“Over the years, we've built a formidable side and it was visible last weekend in the final of the Caf Champions League. For us to win the two legs is an evidence that our team has quality.

“Although, not all the players were part of the 2010 squad that placed second, we hope to learn something from those with the competition experience including our goalkeeper Robert Kidiaba in order to write our own version of the history.

“We may face a club like Barcelona and others but I strongly believe we will not just add up to numbers but rather be a contender,” the former Kotoko player said.

“To become one of the few Ghanaians who have won the Caf Champions League always makes me feel honoured and I will do everything possible to add the Club World Cup to it when we reach Japan.”

Clubs that have qualified so far to the 2015 Club World Cup includes Barcelona (UEFA), River Plate (COMEBOL), Club América (CONCACAF), Auckland City (OFC) and TP Mazembe (CAF).
