Ahead of the suspense filled climax of the 7s league this weekend, the Technical Director of the Ghana Rugby Association (GRA) is predicting a great future for the sport in this country.

Inspired by the technical improvement of many players and teams in this year’s tournament thus far, John Kennedy Koranteng is convinced the sport of rugby will soon rival other established disciplines to bring glory to Ghana.

“It’s very okay, each time we see a lot of improvements in the teams. Individual players also show how skilled they are and so far we’ve not encountered any serious foul play or any misconduct as it was last year. Discipline has been good and everything is alright,” Mr. Koranteng has told www.sportsinghana.com. Competition has been very intense with just a point separating leaders Cosmos Buffaloes from the hot-chasing Legon Titans with just the last round of matches remaining on the final match day this coming Sunday May 27 at the usual Athletics Oval of the University of Ghana in Legon.

It is these developments that give the GRA technical supremo massive dose of confidence that prospects for rugby are very brilliant. “The future is very bright especially now that the University have a team (Titans) and each time they are improving upon their play. We believe that the future looks good. However we still need help financially and technically and will welcome any support,” Mr. Koranteng explained.

Reiterating the point of the Technical Director is Gifty Annan-Myers, President of GRA, famously nicknamed Miss Rugby. “The players are also very keen because everyone wants to be selected into the national team. All the players are coming up, they are rising and playing very well right now,” Madam Annan-Myers stated.

Miss Rugby added: “We need finances to create an enabling environment to promote and develop the sport. The Technical Director needs to be mobile to take the technical expertise around the country to supervise the coaches, not just training them.”

The last round of matches gives Cosmos Buffaloes a huge advantage to cling unto their one point lead against the hapless Teshie Spartans who remain rooted to the bottom without a single try thus far. Titans face Accra Warriors looking to take advantage of any slip by Buffaloes.
