Tema SHS holds Annual Inter 96 Houses Athletics Competition

Tema, Feb 13, GNA - House One put up a spirited performance to emerge winners of the Tema Senior High School (Temasco) Golden Jubilee edition of the Annual Inter 96 Houses Athletics Competition when they gathered 231 points at the School Park on Friday.

House Three placed second with 156 points followed by House Four at third position with 143 points with House Two placing last with 74 points. House One who have won the competition for the third consecutive time, capped off a brilliant display by sweeping the awards for the Overall Best House in the Boys' and Girls' Divisions, a feat they also achieved duri= ng last year's competition.

Reginald Commodore of House One broke the Boys' High Jump record wit= h a leap of 1.79 meters to erase the previous record of 1.78 meters, which was set by Gabriel Narh of House Three in 1998.

Commodore also placed first in the Boys' Long Jump and 100 meters competitions and placed second in the Boys' 200 meters race and third in the Boys' Pole Vault event.

He was thus adjudged the Best Athlete in the Boys' Division. Nathan Richard of House Three also broke the Boys' 200 meters record= by finishing the race in 23 minutes 10 seconds. The previous record of 23 minutes 19 seconds was set by Nii Noi Sowah of the same House in 1999. In the Girls' division, Shefatu Nashiru of House Three powered her house to break the 4x400 meters record in a time of 4 minutes 56 seconds to beat the previous record of 5 minutes 6 seconds in 1998 set by House Two. Shefatu Nashiru who was a delight to watch, won the first place in the Girls' 800 meters, 1500 meters, and 3000 meters competitions, and inspire= d her team to a photo finish victory in the 4x 100 meters event and was adjudged the Best Athlete in the Girls' category.

Saka Acquaye, Greater-Accra Regional Sports Development Officer, who was excited by the fests of the athletes, in his closing address pledged th= e Region's preparedness to dominate the up 96 coming National Athletics Championships slated for Kumasi in June this year.

He therefore urged the other Regions to prepare adequately for the competition to face stiff opposition from his budding athletes. Acquaye donated two basketballs to the School to enhance their trainin= g and urged the Media to show keen interest in School sporting activities, since they provide the needed platform for unearthing of talents.

Raymond Walter Koomson, Marketing Manager of Medama Four Herbal Centre, sponsors of the competition, donated three trophies to the school on behalf of the Centre.
