Tema Stadium for facelift

Accra, Sept. 22, GNA - The Tema Park would soon be a home to a transformed multi-purpose mini stadium. The mini stadium, according to Mr Worlanyo Agrah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council (NSC) would boast of a versatile sports hall and a semi-seater facility to modernize the arena that has played home to several League clubs.

Mr Agrah told GNA Sports that his outfit is collaborating with the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) to inject funds into the project to upgrade the Park up to a befitting stadium for the busy "Harbour City." The CEO said the TMA has pledged 10,000 Ghana cedis towards the facelift which the Sports Council boss says will go a long way in producing a multi-purpose hall at the West end of the arena, dressing rooms and some seated stands.

Mr Agrah said that the dressing rooms have already been built whilst the NSC awaits the arrival of the 10,000 Ghana cedis seed money expected from the TMA to move the project to the next gear. He said in the long term, the Sports Council will pursue the need to build a shop facility on the outer stadium to maximize profit and serve a multi-purpose.

The CEO said similarly, the Wa Park in the Upper West Region will before the end of the year also be provided with plastic chairs to upgrade the standard of the facility.

Mr Agrah told GNA Sports that the move is aimed at uplifting sports infrastructure across the country to serve their intended purposes. Last week Mr Abdul Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Youth and Sports expressed shock at the current state of the Tamale-based Kaladan football Park and promised its immediate upgrading.

The Kaladan Park, which was formerly the grounds of the only existing premiership club in the Northern Region, Real Tamale United (RTU) has been abandoned following the construction of the ultra-modern Sports Stadium during the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. The 'Pride of the North' has since relocated to the Tamale Stadium, leaving the Kaladan Park at the mercy of the weather and nature. The Park has been swallowed up by drenches and the NSC has furnished the Ministry with a budget to uplift and re-grassing of the Kaladan Park to serve the people of the Tamale Metropolis.
