Tema, Nov. 21, GNA - A group of sportsmen have introduced baseball game into sporting activities within the Tema community to increase the number of games as well as diversify sporting disciplines in the country.
Briefing the GNA Sports on Thursday at Tema, Mr E. K. Sackey founder of the Tema Baseball Community Development Leagues (TBCDL) said he discovered that the youth had little or no idea about the game.
Mr Sackey, an electrical rewinder, said he, therefore, organised and trained a few interested young people and their number has since grown to 187 forming six teams including Strong Warriors, Rangers Mets, Yankees, Marine Dragons and Agles.
Mr Charles H. Mason, Advisor and Consultant of the TBCDL said baseball currently enjoys the greatest success in the United States, Japan, Asia and South Africa and entreated the youth, both men and women, to embrace it.
He described the game as a physical and mental capability of exhibiting athletic prowess, execution of strategies, teamwork, learning and character development.
Mr Mason said baseball is a game of fun which brings out the joy of competition and teaches one to become winner as there is no looser.
The TBCDL plans having a league in March 2004, he said and appealed to the youth between ages eight and 21 to start registering to participate in the leagues.
Mr Mason, however, complained about lack of playing fields in the Tema community because the game requires low level land and said a fund raising programme would be launched to solicit for funds to execute this laudable project.
He appealed to individuals and corporate organisations to assist in developing the new discipline.
