Ten Ghanaian boxers qualify for African championship

Accra, April 27, GNA - Ten members of the national amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers, have qualified to participate in this year's African Boxing Confederation Championship due in June in Cairo. The 10 boxers sealed their places following their heroic performances at the African Boxing Confederation Zone Two championship held from 18-23 April in Lome, Togo.

The Ghanaian team was the dominant force at the championship emerging the overall best team with seven gold and three silvers medals which also featured hosts Togo, Burkina Faso, Benin, Gambia and Senegal.

The gold winners were Sulemana Tetteh 96 Light-flyweight (49kg), Duke Micah 96 Flyweight (52kg), Jesse Lartey 96 Lightweight (60kg), Azumah Mohammed 96 Welterweight (69kg), Emmanuel Quarshie 96 Middleweight (75kg), Emmanuel Agyei Anim 96 Light-heavyweight (81kg) and Osumanu Haruna 96 Super-heavyweight (91+ kg).

The trio of Isaac Sackey 96 Bantamweight (56kg), Ben Lamptey 96 Light- welterweight (64kg) and David Bawah 96 Heavyweight (91kg) also picked silver in their respective weight categories.

Head coach, Ofori Asare told GNA Sports that the team which has since returned home have commenced training for the continental championships, which also serves as a qualifier for the International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Boxing Championships to be held from September 16 to October 1, 2011 in Busan, South Korea.

Coach Asare said the global event will also serve as one of the qualifiers for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
