The Ghana Contingent at the Olympic Games a national disgrace

Tue, 12 Aug 2008 Source: Concerned citizen

The Ghanaian contingent at the Olympics was a national disgrace. I am a Ghanaian living abroad and I must say I was ashamed when I saw the Ghanaian contingent march in the Parade of Nations at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Ghana should stop living in the middle ages.

Those of us living abroad have worked very hard to earn respect. We even had a Ghanaian heading the United Nations! Our African brothers and sisters look up to us because we were the first to gain our independence and Ghana did a lot for our African brothers and sisters thanks to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

My question to the Ghana government is this why was only one female marching in the parade? If you don't have anything decent to present, don't do it.

The presentation was terrible and I know I am not the only one who feels that way. Why do you think China spent a billion plus to host the Olympic Games? Ghana cannot afford that kind of money but we can put up a decent presentation for our one minute spotlight. The kente cloth which is a symbol of Ghanaian cultural heritage and has been embraced by Africans worldwide should not always be worn as a wrap. And if it is going to be worn as a wrap it should be worn in a dignified manner.

There are excellent designers in Ghana who can create modern designs with the kente and showcase it to the entire world. Believe me the country would benefit from this. The politicians should stop being selfish and spend money for the good name of the country rather than splurging the money on themselves. If the presentations were graded Ghana would have placed last. Dr. Nkrumah is turning in his grave for what we've done with his beloved country.
