Three win gold at the junior chess tournament

Three players won gold medals in the Junior Open Chess Championship organised by the Mentors Chess Academy at DPS International school, Tema.

The five-round Swiss tournament drew participation from over 45 students from the Ghana International school (GIS), Tema International School, Al-Rayan International School, Queens Int School, Soul Clinic Int. School, University of Ghana, Tema Parent and DPS Int. School.

In the U-20 category, Anthony Ajavon, from the university of Ghana, was crowned champion and took home a trophy after brushing aside Atal Tripathi from GIS.

Hassan Bangoura from Queens International School and defending King Benjamin Orthner, GIS, won bronze.

The U-16 category was won by Roshan Arun from DPS International, followed by Naren Varyani.

The coordinator of the Academy David Acheampong, said chess is an educational tool that strengthens children’s mind, improves concentration, and promotes creativity and problem solving skills.
