Kpando, June 28, GNA - A total of 12 records were broken at the end of the 36th Annual Inter-Zonal Volta Region Schools and Colleges Sports Festival at Kpando. Grace Ofori broke the 800 metres Girls as she clocked 2:27:62 min. and Prosper Awasiame won the 1,500 metres event in the Boys Division with 5:08:19 min. and Awasiame returning a time of 2:02:41 and 4:13:65 respectively. Other records shattered in the girls category were in the high jump 1.46 metres; triple jump 10.08 metres; javelin 35 metres and 4x100 metre race 53.37 minutes.
The other records set in the Boys Division were in the 400 metres with a time of 51.94 min; Pole vault 3.17 metres; 4x100 metres 44:31 min and 4x400 metres 3:35:59. Southern zone was adjudged the overall champions after they hauled 13 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze. Lower North and Upper North zones placed second and third with eight gold, six silver and three bronze and seven gold, nine silver and six bronze medals respectively. Mid South, Central and North zones came fourth, fifth and six respectively.
Mr Musah Yamba Issahaku, Chairman of the Volta Region Schools and Colleges Sports Federation who closed the Games, bemoaned the financial difficulty which had continued to bedevil the organization of the Games. He lamented that most students competed in sporting events in improper kits and sometimes run races barefooted. Mr Issahaku therefore called on major actors, especially the Ministries of Education, Youth and Sports and corporate institutions to sponsor the activities of School sports. He commended the participating athletes and officials for their zeal and discipline, which made the events incident-free. 28 June 09
