UCC win Universities' Cross Country Race

Accra, Nov. 18, GNA - Defending Champions, University of Cape Coast (UCC) scored 60 points to win this year's Unilever Inter-Universities Cross Country Race held at the University of Ghana, Legon in Accra on Saturday.

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) came second with 94 points, when they beat University of Ghana, Legon on count-back, University of Education Winneba placed fourth with 104 points while the University for Development Studies (UDS) took the fifth position with 226 points. In the Women's Division, University of Education, Winneba came first with 64 points followed by UCC at second position with 68 points, University of Ghana took the third position with 87 points, KNUST placed fourth with 108 points, while the UDS came fifth with 218 points. In the Individual's category, Prince Odoom of UCC emerged champion in the 12 kilometre race with a time of 39 minutes followed by Peter Balame of KNUST at second position with a time of 40 minutes while Lawrence Azani of University of Ghana, Legon placed third with a time of 42 minutes.


Rashida Ayoma of KNUST won the Ladies event with a time of 31 minutes in the six-kilometer race with Linda Appiah-Kubi of KNUST coming second while Charity Boahemaa of UEW placed third. Mr Alloysius Denkabe, President of the Ghana Universities Sports Association commended Unilever Ghana Limited for sponsoring the event.

He expressed the hope that the company would continue to support the Universities in the coming years to develop their sports talents.


Mrs Vicky Wereko-Andoh, Corporate Affairs Manager of Unilever Ghana Limited gave the assurance that the company would continue to sponsor the competition in the coming years. The next event will be held in Kumasi next year.
