The University for Development Studies (UDS) men and women soccer teams are on top of the mini games organized by the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) in Cape Coast.

The UDS women soccer team led by the Black Maidens Captain, Mukarama Abdulai beat the host, University of Cape Coast (UCC) 1-0.

Equally, the UDS men soccer team walloped their counterparts from the University of Ghana (UG) 4-3 respectively.

The events which kicked-off at the University of Cape Coast Sports Stadium on January 4, 2019 marked the 8th edition of the GUSA mini games which brought together all public universities except the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The UDS Director of Sports, Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko in a statement said the University was prepared to dominate the soccer arena among tertiary institutions in the West Africa Sub-Region.

He recalled the UDS uplifting of Ghana's flag at the All Africa University Games held in Ethiopia on July 2018 and reassured that there were better times ahead.

The UDS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gabriel Ayum earlier stated that the UDS would use sports to reduce poverty in the three regions of the north.

This was at the university’s 19 Congregation and the climax of the Golden Jubilee celebration on the theme, “UDS at 25: Impact on National Development through Practical Higher Education.”

According to him, the university has so far produced soccer giants including the Black Maidens Captain, Mukarama Abdulai.

Professor Teye maintained that the UDS mandate is to blend theory with practice as a means to accelerate the socio-economic development of the three regions of the north.
