Use sports to propagate the gospel -Chairman

Kona (Ash), April 24, GNA - Mr Stanley Osei Atobrah, Chairman of the youth fellowship of the Kona Circuit of the Methodist Church has called on Christians to use sports and games to propagate the gospel of Jesus Christ.

He said since sports promotes discipline and excellent human relations, the churches should organise sports and games for their youth to enable them relate properly to all manner of people. Mr Atobrah was speaking at a sports festival organised by the Kona circuit of the church for seven societies to climax the Easter activities at Kona.

He noted that sports and games held during occasions such as Christmas and Easter prevent Christian youth from embarking on anti-social activities.

He therefore urged church leaders to always draw up socio-religious sports and games programmes on such occasions "so as to put the devil away from influencing the youth".

Mr Atobrah said such an arrangement would go a long way in preventing the Christian youth from going to drinking bars, discos and attending dances where a lot of such anti-social activities take place. Seven towns in the circuit including Kona, Tano-Dumase, Agona, Jamasi, Wiamoase and Beposo took part in the games. The Reverend Dickson Anane Asiedu of the Agona Circuit of the Methodist Church presented a football trophy to the Agona youth team for emerging champions.

In a related development, the Saint Joseph's Catholic parish at Mamponteng in the Kwabre District also organised a sports festival for the Parish Catholic Youth Organisation (CYO) at Mamponteng. Jamasi, Anhwiaa, Kenyasi CYO and the Mamponteng Methodist Youth Fellowship took part in the festival.
