Manchester United are edging closer to signing Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder Bernard Mensah after scouting him yesterday evening, as per the Daily Star. The newspaper also claims that the Red Devils surprisingly want him to be their next signing at the club.

The 20-year-old has been a stand-out player for Vitoria in the Portuguese league this season, scoring five goals in 30 games for Os Conquistadores, which has prompted United to try and sign the youngster, as per the Star.

The Ghanian made his international debut for the Black Stars on Monday evening and scored the only goal in their friendly game with Togo, which United representatives also saw, as per the Metro.

Mensah would surely add a greater attacking intent to Louis van Gaal’s midfield next season, should he join.

United’s midfield scored 29 goals last season, with Juan Mata grabbing nine of those strikes. With Mensah, plus new signing Memphis Depay, that total would surely improve.

Last month, Mensah told Portuguese newspaper A Bola, that the Red Devils are interested in him but he is focusing on his immediate future. “It’s true that United want to sign me. I haven’t talked to anyone from United, but I know from my agent that they are currently negotiating with my club. Right now, I’m focused on Vitória though,” he said, as reported by the Metro.

The Star report that he has just signed with Jorge Mendes, who has overseen several deals for United in the past and will surely look to do the same for Mensah.

The player has been at Vitoria since 2012, where last season, he helped them finish 5th in the Primeira Liga.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have been linked with a move for another powerful star, the Star report Mario Mandžuki? is also wanted by Man United.
