Cape Coast, March 8, GNA - Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Coast, (UCC) on Saturday appealed to government to fund and support post graduate courses locally to achieve the desired results. He noted that monies spent on sponsoring one graduate for a post graduate course outside the country can be judiciously used in training about six graduates in the country to undertake the same course.
Prof. Naana Agyeman said this at the inauguration of a GH¢50,000 sports complex for the Kwame Nkrumah Hall of UCC to climax the 11th Hall Week celebration and dedication of sports complex. The celebration of the Hall Week is on the theme "The impact of Government Educational Policies on Tertiary Education". The Vice Chancellor urged the students to ensure that the knowledge they acquire at the University is used proactively to benefit others in their communities and challenged to the Hall to select one school in the community and organize classes for the pupils.
Dr Peter Kwarpong, the Hall Master in a welcoming address said the project which is funded mainly by the student's of the Hall was as a result of the importance of sports and recreation that the students attach in the health, academic and social lives of all, particularly students. He said the complex places the Hall in the lead once more and was of the hope that it will contribute to the development of sports in UCC and the Central Region.
Dr Kwarpong said the Hall has plans to construct 'Nkrumah gardens' as a place for recreation and relaxation for the entire University community and appealed to the all to donate generously towards the completion of the project. He commended sports men and women of the Hall for their outstanding achievements during last semester games. The Hall Master congratulated the students and urged them to continue to give their unalloyed support by contributing positively towards the development of the Hall.
Mr Edward Ortsin Amoabeng, President of the Hall in his report said a number of fire extinguishers have been purchased for all the floors of the hall, upgrading of the Junior Common Room with supply of more chairs, fans, new curtains and a satellite telecast. The library and reading room has also seen a face lift with the stock of books including dictionaries, Bibles, Qurans and chairs as well as an extension of an internet connectivity to the library. The gathering observed a minutes silence in remembrance of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and appealed to the students to emulate his shinning example. The complex was later dedicated by Rev. Dr Joshua Owusu Sekyere, a lecturer of the University. A volley ball exhibition match between the Nkrumah and Oguaa Halls ended 1-1.
