Hohoe, March 24, GNA - Saint Mary's Senior High School (SMASCO) and Leklebi SHS (LESEC) emerged overall winners of the weeklong 19th Northern Zone Inter- Schools Sports in the boys and girls categories. The championship which took place at the Hohoe E. P. School Park saw SMASCO winning seven gold, four silver and three bronze medals while LESEC won eight gold, six silver and five bronze medals to beat 10 competing schools in the contest to complete their winning feat. Hohoe E.P. Senior Secondary School (HEPSS)were the first runner-up in the boys category as they recorded six gold, four silver and three bronze with Likpe SHS (LISEC) emerging as first runner-up in the girls division with five gold, three silver and four bronze medals. The position for the second runner-up positions went to LISEC and HEPSS in the boys and girls divisions after they registered two gold, two silver and five bronze medals and four gold, six silver, and two bronze medals respectively.
The fourth position was grabbed by LESEC and ASTECH. In the boys final football match, HEPSS pipped LISEC by a lone goal scored by Raymond Chidi while the girls match between HEPSS and Alavanyo Secondary Technical (ASTECH) ending 4-3 on penalties after a barren draw after regulation. Master David Amonoo-Mends of SMASCO won the 100 metres final race with 12:16 min after he beat Saviour Agbenyegah of LESEC to the second position who had 12.29 min. with Yakubu Abdul-Karim of HEPSS taking the third position with a time of 12:67 respectively. The girls 100 metre race was won by Macdonna Fianyo of ASTECH, followed by Rita Anyomi and Melody Baku with times of 14: 38, 14:66 and 14:83 respectively.
Mr Cyprian K. Otti, Chairman of the Northern Zone in his closing remarks appealed to major actors in the educational sector to support government to give equal attention to the development of sports infrastructure in second cycle institutions to meet the corresponding investment being extended to teaching and learning facilities. He said the time has come for sporting events such as hockey, table tennis and lawn tennis, rugby, swimming and boxing to be explored and given its due share and recognition. Mr Otti said the second cycle sports platform was a budding arena of poaching youthful talents, which when harnessed properly could contribute immensely to the rapid socio-economic development of the country, besides its health benefits to all. The Chairman who is also Headmaster of Likpe SHS in the Hohoe Municipality appealed to the Ghana Education Service to release funds promptly towards the organization of such games since the current situation was frustrating and lowers morale. He commended the participating schools and officials for comporting and conducting themselves well and making the games incident-free. 24 March 09
