The 2013 Cowbell National Cycling Tour begun on a notion of hope and of grandeur on 27th May 2013 at the Accra Sports Stadium. The cyclists were to ride a total of 1,313km, through eight regions. The twelve clubs went through eighteen cities in eleven stages and obviously, there was one champion.

It takes ‘‘a pelican with strong legs and wings’’ to maintain stability in turbulent ocean current and so was Samuel Anim of Young Boys Cycling Club in Accra, winning the yellow, green and red jerseys(signifying best by points, best by time and best finisher respectively) during almost all stages of the competition.

One thing phenomenal about this young man is that, he was nine minutes forty- five seconds(9’ 45’’) thereabout behind the yellow jersey due to an ‘‘impedimentia’’ which halted him for approximately five minutes. He defied the odds at the Koforidua Mountains and beat the time to a little over one minute, which left everybody stirring in awe because, he is known as an excellent roller and not a climber. With respect to those who don’t have the genetic dice favouring them, he shows when you grow in stature and grace, nothing can stop you.

On the other fringe, the Volta Star team saw its first appearance as far as the tour is concerned with Justice Sena Mawusi, Gideon Nartey, Robert Osam, Walid Mohammed and Obimpeh .. representing the Volta Region. The first three races saw three of their cyclists withdrawn on technical grounds with only Justice Mawusi Sena and Gideon Nartey remaining. According to the Union Cyclists International rules(U.C.I), at least three cyclists guarantees team classification. Without any equivocation, the duo fought for individual honours.

Young Justice Mawusi Sena was among the bright spots (about 35 minutes behind the yellow jersey), kept racing like ‘‘a leveret in its first year’’. The former US secretary of defence Collin Powell said ‘‘perpetual optimism is force multiplier’’ Indeed the duo especially Justice Mawusi might have taken a cue from his statement making him part of the second breakaway bunch to ‘‘cross the rubicon’’ on several occasions, sounding he possess ‘‘the servitude of a zebra’’ which need no eloquent speeches. Certainly, revulsion it can’t be about their performance.

Conclusively, much regards and appreciation goes to the technical duo of Mr. Amen Ametor and Mr. Kofi Apoh( the Volta Regional Secretary and Chairman of cycling respectively) who performed creditably and their financier Mr Joe Ayivor the CEO of from home lucky raffle who fights ‘‘ tooth and nail’’ to help cycling see the light of day in the Volta Region. Congratulations to Cowbell Promasidor Ghana Limited who gave the seventy-two cyclists the exposure. ‘‘What we do for ourselves dies with us, what we do for others remains immortal’’ (Albert Pine).
