Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris says his inability to score goals in the Turkish Super Lig is due to the unfavourable position he is often assigned to at his club Trabzonspor.
The former BK Hacken attacker has recorded only four goals from 26 appearances since joining the Turkish outfit from Russian side Spartak Moscow in 2014.
“In Russia, I was playing out of position (wings). I used to fight with the coach because that is not my ideal position. Unfortunately, the situation remains the same in Turkey. When I play from the wings, I am a completely different player as opposed to playing upfront,” Waris told Starr FM.
The 23-year-old naturally plays as a striker but he is also used as a winger. He scored a total of 22 goals to emerge top scorer at BK Hacken in the Swedish top flight in 2012, leading to his big move to the Russia giants.
Warris joined French side Valenciennes last year from Spartak Moscow on a six-month loan deal, making 12 appearances and scoring nine goals.
The former Right to Dream Academy player sustained an injury during the 2014 / 2015 pre-season which cost him a place at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
He has been unable to reclaim his position at Trabzonspor due to the sparkling form of striker Oscar Cardozo, who was the club’s top scorer last season with 20 goals.
“Sometimes it’s just about going to the right club that knows what you can do,” Waris said.
