Ghana and Mali met for the first time in a World Cup qualifier in an exciting game in 2009.
Ghana edged out Mali with a 2-0 win, with former Juventus star Kwadwo Asamoah leading the charge.
The match, which took place at Stade du 26 Mars, is dubbed by many Ghanaians as "the Kwadwo Asamoah show." The nimble-footed midfielder delivered what many refer to as his best performance in a Black Stars jersey.
Asamoah put Ghana in the lead in the 66th minute with an astonishing long-range shot from the edge of the box, following a silky first touch that allowed him to get past his marker.
Ghana doubled their lead and sealed the victory with a beautiful build-up on the left, with Michael Essien as the principal architect of the play. He orchestrated the movement, ultimately setting up Matthew Amoah for a composed finish from inside the box.
Ghana's lineup for the match:
Richard Kingson, John Paintsil, Harrison Afful, John Mensah, Eric Addo, Anthony Annan, Michael Essien/Moussa Narry, Kwadwo Asamoah, Prince Tagoe/Haminu Draman, Opoku Agyeman/Isaac Vorsah, Matthew Amoah.
