Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim’s controversial post‑match comments after Manchester United drew 1–1 with Leeds United in the Premier League on January 4, 2025, was a leading factor in his dismissal.

Following the disappointing result, journalists questioned the coach’s ability to manage the Red Devils after recording inconsistent performances since assuming the role.

This did not sit well with Amorim, who responded that he was the manager of the club and that he had a say in the affairs of the team.

He further stated that although he was not like other high‑profile managers such as Thomas Tuchel, José Mourinho, or Antonio Conte, he would remain in his position until the board decided otherwise.

“Guys, stop with that. I noticed that you receive selective information about everything. I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. And that is clear. I know that my name is not Tuchel, it’s not Conte, it’s not Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United and it’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decides to change. So that was my point. I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes here to replace me,” he told the media.

Amorim further criticised those attacking the team’s performance, saying “If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms of everything, then we need to change the club. No, guys, I just want to say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach. Every department, the scouting department, the sporting director needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.”

This outburst created a tense atmosphere in England, as it was believed that he had taken a swipe at the board.

The following day, January 5, 2025, the club released an official statement announcing his dismissal.

The decision came after Amorim met with Director of Football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada.

Darren Fletcher, who previously served as an under‑18 coach at Manchester United, has been appointed as the new manager of the English side.
