Former Board chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, has attributed the subpar condition of the country's pitches to insufficient government support.
He observed that sports organisations lack the financial capacity to secure the necessary resources for maintaining pitches to contemporary standards.
The ex-NSA board chairman emphasised the government's responsibility to increase funding for sports management, which is essential for the upkeep of various sports facilities.
He maintained that without such support, the dissatisfaction with the pitches' condition will persist.
"When you're part of an institution and lack the necessary resources, it becomes exceedingly challenging to meet the expectations set before you. Maintaining pitches, stadiums, or facilities is no small feat. The issue lies in the funding—it's simply not sufficient. Were the funds adequate, we wouldn't be voicing the complaints we have now.
"I recall a video showing individuals removing grass from a pitch. Without government investment in pitch maintenance and sports management, our grievances will persist. Imposing fees for maintenance could ultimately drive away those who patronize the facility," he expressed in Twi during an interview on Kessben FM.
This statement follows public outcry over the deteriorating state of pitches, which hampers player performance.
Thomas Partey, the Black Stars captain, has called on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to ensure the pitches are well-maintained for the players' enjoyment.
