The Chairperson for the Western Regional Sports Committee (WRSC), Wilson Arthur, has indicated that his outfit will be the first to operationalize the 2016 Sports Act fully as part of measures to fix the broken sports economy of the Western Region.

Mr Arthur indicated the WRSC needs to make sure the Western Regional Sports Committee works through various interventions rather than being expectant of some help which will come from nowhere.

“We got the Sekondi Sports Stadium in 2008 and we have allowed this investment to rot. Now we need more government resources to fix it and sit aloof again for it to rot. We need interventions and credibility to attract resources and opportunities to develop our sports economy,” he said.

Arthur, who is the owner of Division One Club, Skyy FC added that he is relying heavily on his experiences of brokering sponsorship deals like how he helped Kotoko to secure a deal with MTN as well as GN Bank for the Division One League sponsorship.

Mr Arthur’s dream is to operationalize the 45 hotel rooms available at Sekondi Stadium, the Restaurant, Sports Wellness place and Clinic and Sports Training School of Excellence which will produce coaches and referees for the districts, region, Ghana and beyond.

Mr Wilson Arthur is the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Wassa East in the Western Region and doubles as the Dean for the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) of the Western Region. He was sworn into office as chairperson for Western Regional Sports Committee (WRSC) mainly because of his unique skills of reviving a colts team and guiding it to become a Division One football club.

His team Skyy FC has the best talents which he scouted from his district and now the team is playing in the Division One league.

“I built a standard mini stadium with FIFA standard grass pitch, fenced with changing rooms and a 500 seater VIP stand and another 500 seater popular stand,” he stated.

The WRSC will hold its first stakeholders' Solution Workshop on Friday, May 31, 2019, which will be led by Mr Magnus Rex Danquah, a sports administrator. The workshop will be chaired by Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhen of Essikado, with Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, Western Regional Minister, being the host.

In attendance will be Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, National Sports Association (NSA) Board Chairperson, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, Sports Minister, Hon OB Amoah, a deputy minister who is also a former deputy sports minister, as well as journalists from the Region, among others.
