The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has disclosed that the government paid over US$3 million to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation for coverage of the 2023 All African Games.

The 13th African Games, hosted by Ghana from March 8–23, 2024, lasted 15 days, and the games were broadcast live on the state broadcasting corporation.

During his appearance at the Public Accounts Committee sitting on Monday, August 19, 2024, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, asked the Sports Minister to specify the amount GTV charged for its coverage of the games.

Mustapha Ussif responded, “GBC was the official broadcaster for the 13th African Games, and we can confirm that full payment has been made to GBC.”

“I can’t recall the exact amount, but I know it is in excess of US$3 million,” he added.

Sam George has vowed to probe GBC officials when they appear before the Committee.

The government of Ghana spent US$195 million on the construction of facilities for the 2023 African Games. As part of hosting the competition, the state also provided accommodation and meals for athletes and officials from participating countries.

Ghana won a total of 69 medals at the 2023 African Games.
