Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of Youth and Sports, claims that his Ministry has paid the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) $3 million.
The ministry claims that the sum is full payment for the coverage of the Accra, Ghana, 2024 All African Games four months ago.
The Minister made these comments during a Monday, August 19, 2024, Public Accounts Committee appearance in answer to a question from Samuel George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, regarding the status of payment to the public broadcaster.
“You had an arrangement with GBC to cover the All African Games. Can you share with this committee how much that coverage was for, and whether payment has been made for same?” Sam George quizzed.
Mr Mustapha Ussif responded confirming that “Yes, GBC was the official broadcaster for the 13th All African Games, and I can confirm that full payment has been made to GBC. I can’t remember the exact amount but I know that it is in the excess of $3 million”
Mr George stressed by asking “you paid GBC in excess of $3 million for coverage of the All African Games…?” and the Minister responded, “Yes.”
Sam George claims that the basis for his query was the fact that “most of the technicians that worked on the All African Games have still not been paid. So we wanted to ascertain if you have paid and how much has been paid.”
He stated that the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation will be questioned by the Public Accounts Committee on why they have yet to pay the technicians that worked for them when they next appear before the committee.
