Gold Fields PGA championship is aimed at exposing the golfers to international standards
Anthony Kwame Mintah, President, Professional Golfers Association (PGA) has reiterated of the vision to expose Ghanaian golfers internationally at the ongoing 4th edition of the Gold Fields PGA Golf Championship, 2017.
The Gold Fields PGA championship, which is a flagship event on the calendar of the PGA is aimed at exposing the golfers to international standards.
In an interview with Ghana News Agency, Mr. Mintah noted that the association wants to expose the golfers to other international competitions around the continent.
“We are currently busy talking to the sunshine tour, which is played in South Africa and also trying to get golfers to qualify for events outside of Africa.
“We want to have golfers who would try for the Europeans, we have got plans to elevate Ghana and also with plans to expand the game beyond the professional game by bringing the game closer to communities” he added.
According to Mr. Mintah, the PGA is in talks with the Ministry of Education to extend the game to the various schools to help cultivate and grow the next generation of disciplined and hardworking citizens, since golf is a sports that is played with a discipline and integrity.
Mr. Hans De Beer, the Chairman for the planning committee, Gold Fields Damang 2017 PGA championship on his part noted of the hard work that has gone into the extension of the course to meet international standards and also to train golfers for international tournaments.
“We have put in a lot of hard work and dedication in the past six months to get the course ready for this tournament.
“To make this tournament more challenging we added 300 meters to the golf course, with a plan and strategy to take the golfers to the next level, we want to raise the next big name golfer from Africa.
“We want to give the opportunity to our professionals to all the major championships available for them” he added.
The four day championship currently ongoing at the Damang golf course commenced today with 54 golfers including international golfers from Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Benin and Cote d’ivoire.
