2015 All Africa Games heroine Portia Boakye has disclosed that the Black Queens wanted to win the gold medal to honour Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan.
According to the striker, Asamoah Gyan inspired them and encouraged them to go for the ultimate when he visited the team and donated an amount of $10,000 ahead of the start of the tournament.
Boakye scored the winning goal for Ghana in the 88th-minute with a left volley from a rebound when Agnes Aduako failed to put the ball behind the net from the penalty spot as they beat Les Lionesses 1-0. The Fabulous Ladies striker insists that the team won the medal for Gyan.
“Before the tournament started, Asamoah Gyan came to our camp and donated some money to us. He also encouraged us to go for gold so we were determined to win the trophy for him,” Boakye said in an exclusive interview with GHANAsoccernet.com
“We were really motivated by Gyan. Most of us had not met him before so we were all ready to meet him. And he spoke to us in a way that will make us go for the trophy and we won it for him,” she added.
The Shanghai SIPG striker pledged to reward the team again should they win gold at the tournament after the earlier donation he did.
