Western Region Sports Associations inaugurated

Essipong, (W/R) May 4, GNA - 18 Western Regional Sports Associations were on Monday inaugurated by Nana Kofi Abuna 11, Chief of Essipong, at the Sekondi Sports Stadium at Essipong. Nana Abuna jointly administered the oath of office to the executives of the Associations.

The inaugurated Associations are football, athletics, badminton, table tennis, handball, basketball, netball, body building, sports for all, hockey, volleyball, taekwando, women in sports, cycling, boxing, karate, disabled sports and rugby.

Mr Hornsby Odoi, Chief Administrative Officer of the National Sports Council (NSC), called on the executives of the Associations to collaborate with the NSC to facilitate the administration of the various sporting disciplines.

He asked the executives to study the Sports Act which is the only legislation regulating the country's sports to enable them perform their duties professionally and to acquaint themselves with the structures and work of the Council to enable them execute their mandate. Mr Odoi said the NSC cannot continue to signal handedly fund programmes of the Associations and therefore advised them to form committees to help raise funds for their programmes.

Mr Rexford Amui, the Regional Sports Development Officer called on the executives to help inject professionalism, dedication, discipline and loyalty into the various sporting disciplines in the Region. He also urged them to help identify and nurture sporting talents in the Region to "Feed our various national teams".

Mr John Abieku Garbrah, Administrative Manager of the Ghana Rubber Estates Limited, who presided over the meeting called on the associations to assist to develop lesser known sports in the Region. 04 May 10
