A post by the official handle of the FIFA World Cup on X (formerly Twitter) has brought the name of legendary Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan into the trends.

Asamoah Gyan is trending after the FIFA World Cup handle posted a banner of the 2010 World Cup, asking football lovers about their fondest memories from the tournament.

Most of the respondents cited the Ghana versus Uruguay match as their ideal memory from the tournament, which was held in South Africa.

It will be recalled that the quarter-final match between Ghana and Uruguay was embroiled in controversy after Luis Suarez palmed away a goal-bound header from Dominic Adiyiah.

Ghana was subsequently awarded a last-minute penalty, with Asamoah Gyan missing what would have been a historic goal for the Black Stars.

Ghana went on to lose the match via penalty shootouts, with Uruguay winning 4-2.

The match continues to live in the minds of football lovers across the world, with some still in disbelief over how it ended.

Some continue to blame Asamoah Gyan for missing the penalty that would have made Ghana the first African country to qualify for the semi-final of the World Cup.

Others also continue to castigate Luis Suarez for denying Ghana and Africa a chance to play in the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2010.

In that tournament, Asamoah Gyan scored three goals for Ghana including an incredible finish against the US in the round of 16 to qualify Ghana to the quarter-finals.
