Why Eric Tinkler ‘ditched’ Kotoko after 2 months

South African tactician Eric Tinkler is said to have left his role as Asante Kotoko head coach after receiving offers from other clubs interested in securing his services.

In a statement released on September 28, 2026, the Kumasi-based club announced that its Board of Directors had agreed to the coach’s request to be released from his contract.

It was indicated that the coach had extensive meetings with Kotoko’s Board of Directors in an attempt to convince him to reconsider his decision, but he remained determined to leave.

Eric Tinkler leaves Kotoko after two months in charge

This was reportedly prompted by the fact that a South African club had approached the manager with a lucrative offer that is superior to what he currently earns.

The coach is said to have been enticed by the financial terms of the offer and the opportunity to work in his home country in a more competitive league.

Durban City have been linked with the coach as they search for a new head coach after parting ways with Tunisian tactician Khalil Ben Youssef, who spent just three months in charge and oversaw seven league matches, recording one win, four draws, and two defeats.

The news came after Kotoko’s 2-0 defeat to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Tinkler managed four games in the 2026/2027 Ghana Premier League season, winning once, drawing twice, and losing once.
