Former Management member of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and a former Sport Journalist, Dr Kwame Baah Nuako has questioned why we keep spending money on football despite the seeming lack of end product.
Dr Baah-Nuako who is the General Manager, sustainability at Ghana National Petroleum Corporation says Ghana must make radical changes to our sports funding going into the future by rewarding results and not mediocrity.
He says we should spend our monies on disciplines that produce results and stop this age old adage that football is the passion of the nation.
For instance he cited the amount of money and huge bonuses paid to players of the Black Stars the last two decades despite them having nothing to show for in terms of trophies.
“We should move away from a system we are rewarding mediocrity. We have a national soccer team that has won nothing for several despite spending millions of dollars but we keep on saying it the passion of the nation. It is the passion of the nation yes. However, we have to stop rewarding mediocrity” he told JOY SPORTS.
Many Ghanaians have questioned the huge bonuses handed to players of the Black Stars despite the team's obvious failures to the detriment of other disciplines who are getting results.
Dr Baah Nuako is among the numerous persons who believe we are not getting value for money from the Black Stars and football with the mammoth spending.
“I believe that the funding amount we put into Ghana soccer every year should be a function of the results that they bring” he concluded.
