Why is Kwasi Sibo trending?

Black Stars midfielder Kwasi Sibo has faced backlash following his performance in the team’s defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on September 24, 2026.

Ghana conceded the opening goal through a long-range strike from Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Malick Yalcouye, who beat Lawrence Ati-Zigi just before the end of the first half.

Franck Kessie converted a penalty in the second half to make it 2-0 at the end of the match, a result that angered some members of the public, despite the absence of some key players.

However, Sibo has come under criticism from a section of fans who believe he contributed to the build-up to Malick’s goal that gave Côte d’Ivoire the lead.

They argued that the Al-Swehly SC midfielder should have closed down the Brighton player as soon as he received the ball to deny him the space and freedom to take the long-range shot.

Some fans were also unhappy with what they described as Sibo’s sluggish movement, lack of aggression, control and awareness during the game. They felt he lacked the pace and physicality needed to play in the pivot role in midfield.

They called on Sibo to improve his performance against The Gambia in Ghana’s next game to retain his place in the team; otherwise, they believe another player should be given the opportunity.

Some fans suggested that substitute Augustine Boakye, who was introduced during the game, brought energy and creativity to the midfield and provided a spark for the team to create opportunities in attack.
