Former Black Stars midfielder Yusif Chibsah believes that the troubles of the Black Stars are multifaceted and require a holistic approach to address them.
Speaking in an interview with Global Sports Today via YouTube, the former Asante Kotoko midfielder identified commitment as one of the major challenges facing the Black Stars.
Chibsah agreed with the observation that some of the Black Stars are more committed to their clubs than they are to the country.
However, Chibsah believes that the issue is not merely due to the players not being interested in playing for Ghana but also due to a myriad of factors.
He mentioned players’ welfare as one of the factors contributing to the apparent lack of commitment by some of the Black Stars players.
Chibsah did not blame the situation on the Black Stars coaches but suggested a conscious effort by all parties in the Ghanaian football ecosystem to address the problem.
“Our problems are quite complex, so you can't just propose one solution for all of them. You need to tackle the issues from various angles in order to have a holistic solution to the problems.
“I agree that the commitment level of some of our players is not up to expectation. That is why we don’t see some players replicate their club form for the national team. The difference is the commitment level.
“There are a lot of factors contributing to this. We need to look at players' welfare. As stakeholders, we have a role to play, and we need to be interested in the welfare of the players,” he said.
The Black Stars have become topical again following undesired results in their opening two matches of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
A defeat to Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and a draw with Niger on September 5 and September 9, respectively, have intensified pressure on coach Otto Addo, with calls for his dismissal emerging from certain quarters.
Ghana, who are in Group E of the qualifiers, are third with just a point, the same as Niger. Angola are leading the group with six points, with Sudan being second with three points.
