Wife's leg amputated, Kotoko contract termination - Why Patrick Asmah hasn't played football in a year

Former Asante Kotoko defender, Patrick Asmah, has shared his struggles over the past year that abruptly halted his career.

The former Ghana U-20 left-back has gone from parting ways with Kotoko to his wife having her leg amputated within a year.

In an interview with MO TV on YouTube, Asmah stated that he had to put his career on hold due to his wife's complicated health issues.

"I had to stay out. I had big family issues that I needed to solve, that's why I had to stay off for a while."

Narrating the difficult health struggle, he added that two hospitals refused to perform surgery on his wife, which resulted in her amputation.

"My wife had the issues while I was at Kotoko. She had a problem with her leg. She came to Kumasi, and we visited a doctor who put the leg in a cast. After two months, when we went back for the surgery, the doctor said he had never seen the leg before, so he couldn't do the surgery."

"So we had to come to Accra to find another doctor. They made us buy so many things only for them to tell us they couldn't do the surgery."

He continued that after learning that his wife would need to have her leg amputated, he decided to put his career on hold.

"So it got to the point where she had to be amputated, and I couldn't leave her to play football. Also, I have two boys. If I had left them to play football, who would take care of them? That is why I had to stay off football."

According to Asmah, he is in a good state as his wife is in good condition, hence, he is ready to resume his career.

"I'm hoping, and if God's willing, I get the opportunity, I will play. It was very difficult, but by God's grace, we have put things in place."

"At the moment, she is doing well (after the amputation)."

Patrick Asmah had his contract terminated by the Porcupine Warriors in 2023 after an unimpressive two-year spell with the club.

He is currently a free agent and is hoping to land a deal to resume football after attaining stability in his family.
