Willie Klutse reveals cause of Ghana's trophy drought

Ex-Ghana star Willie Klutse has suggested that unless current Black Stars players change their mentality, there is no way the country can end the over 30 year trophy drought.

Kluste belongs to the 1978 squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations for the third time for Ghana. The Black Stars has since then won just one AFCON title; in 1982 and have gone 39 years without glory at that stage.

Speaking to Joy News on why Ghana has failed to annex a major trophy since 1982, Willie Klutse singled out the wrong mentality of modern day Black Stars players as the cause.

“I see players projecting themselves for their foreign contracts and forgotten about the agenda of the country” Klutse said.

“Right now we are thinking about not winning the AFCON trophy in 39 years. Is that the mentality of our players? Are they also thinking like that? Are they hungry to win the cup for us or they are just trying to play in the African Cup of nations, play in the world cup and better their contracts outside the country,” he quizzed.

“If they have this mentality there is no way we can win the Africa Cup of Nations now. Because the mentality back then is different from the mentality that I see this time around” he boldly claimed.

Willie Klutse believes that too much focus on money is actually what sways the attention of players on the big prize.

“They only come and their mentality is on money. They are going to African Cup of Nations and they want to meet the president and bargain how much we are getting. They have their cup because the focus is on the money and not the cup”.

Willie Klutse is now the technical director of Ghana Premier League side, Inter Allies.
