Kwesi Appiah says his best game as coach of the Ghana national team is the resounding 6-1 win over Egypt in the 2014 World Cup playoffs.
The Black Stars needed a convincing win in the first leg of the epic playoff against the record African Cup winners in Kumasi.
Egypt had not lost a game throughout the qualifiers prior to meeting the Black Stars in the first leg of the ultimate qualifier where they were absolutely butchered buy a determined and highly motivated Ghana team.
A brace by captain Asamoah Gyan were complemented by goals from Abdul Majeed Waris, Sulley Muntari, Christian Atsu and an own goal by Wael Gomaa summed up a memorable day for the Black Stars.
Egypt could only manage a consolation goal off a spot kick well converted by the celebrated Mohammed Aboutreka.
A 2-1 win in the return encounter was woefully inadequate for the Pharaohs to make their long-awaited return to the World Cup finals as Ghana progressed on a commanding 7-3 aggregate scoreline.
Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has ranked the memorable win in Kumasi as his best ever game as coach of the Black Stars.
“My best game with the Black Stars must be Ghana’s win over Egypt in Kumasi,” Appiah told Peace FM.
“It was a very crucial game and we needed a good result to cushion us for the return encounter.
“And the boys responded very well right from the first whistle to the last. Everything went according to plan on that day.”
Appiah became the first indigenous Ghanaian to lead the Black Stars to World Cup qualification as a result of the massive aggregate win over Egypt.
He however has his work cut out for him as he must now find a way to help Ghana navigate through a tough group alongside Germany, Portugal and USA at the finals in Brazil.
