World Cup Reality vs Prophecy: How Ghanaian prophets got it wrong

"God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does he speak and not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?" Numbers 23:19

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, several Ghanaian pastors and prophets made bold predictions about the tournament, the Black Stars and the eventual champions.

While some of these prophecies generated widespread attention and excitement, many failed to materialise, attracting criticism and ridicule from sections of the public.

Below are some of the notable predictions that did not come to pass, as well as the few that proved accurate.

Prophet Nigel Gaisie predicts South Africa's early exit



The Founder and Leader of Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, released a series of prophecies ahead of the tournament.

On June 18, 2026, he posted on Facebook, "South Africa will be the first country to exit the tournament. I pray for them to win."

Contrary to the prediction, South Africa finished second in Group A with four points, securing qualification to the knockout stage.

'World Cup may be postponed'

During his church's Watch Night service on December 31, 2025, Prophet Nigel Gaisie also claimed God had revealed to him that the 2026 FIFA World Cup could face disruption.

"I saw in America a lot of jets in the skies. If we don't pray, the World Cup may not come on, or maybe it may be postponed, or there will be a problem with the one in America.

"The Lord carried my spirit, and I saw planes in the skies of America. I will pray and we will avert it because prayer can avert things," he said.

The tournament, however, was held as scheduled in the United States, Mexico and Canada without any postponement.

Black Stars will reach 2026 World Cup finals – Prophet Nigel Gaisie

Prophet Nigel Gaisie once again predicted that Ghana’s Black Stars would reach the finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the prophecy has failed to materialise, as Ghana did not make it to the final stage of the tournament.

'Black Stars will lose all World Cup matches' - Prophet Eric Boahen Uche



In May 2026, Prophet Eric Boahen Uche predicted that Ghana would lose all three of its group-stage matches.

According to him, the Black Stars were spiritually weak and required prayers and divine intervention.

"Ghana should come and see me. They will lose all three group-stage matches in the competition. I'm not joking. With humility, they should come for consultation so I can help.

"It is the spirit that we use to play football. In the spiritual world, the team is weak. When the matches are about to be played, I will come and tell the scoreline. When I said they would lose the friendlies, they lost them, right?" he said.

The prophecy was disproved when Ghana defeated Panama in its opening group match.

The prediction attracted criticism from football fans and celebrities, including musician Captain Planet.

Following Ghana's victory, Prophet Uche maintained that the outcome had changed because members of his church fasted and prayed, thereby averting the prophecy.

Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah predicts Ghana's victory over England



The Founder and Leader of Believers Worship Centre Church and the Philadelphia Movement, Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah, also predicted a famous victory for Ghana against England.

Addressing his congregation on June 21, 2026, he said Ghanaians would experience even greater celebrations than they did after Ghana's victory over Panama.

"Just look at how Ghanaians were excited after Ghana's win in the previous match. Then imagine the one that is coming," he said.

However, Ghana and England played out a draw on June 23, 2026.

Prophet Elisha Anane predicts Ghana's victory over England



Prophet Elisha Anane of Charismatic Praise Ministry International also confidently predicted that Ghana would defeat England.

Speaking in an interview with Sankofa Radio, he said, "They should write down the 41st minute. Ghana will score against England and win the match before the 90th minute. I have seen it, and I am not here for Ghanaians to insult me. Ghana is going to score and win; simple."

However, the match ended in a draw, making the prophecy inaccurate.

Prophet Telvin Adjei Sowah predicts Declan Rice own goal



Head Pastor of Prophetic Life Embassy, Prophet Telvin Adjei Sowah, made one of the tournament's most widely circulated predictions.

He declared that Ghana would defeat England and that England midfielder Declan Rice, who wears the number four jersey, would score an own goal.

"We will colonise them. The England national team, we will colonise England.

"Their number four is the one who will give us the goal. The Ghanaian people will be dancing. We will colonise them and they will cry in Britain. Their king will call and ask what is happening. The coach will be sweating, and we will colonise them."

He further claimed that Ghana's victory would symbolise "colonising the colonial masters."

The match, however, ended in a draw and Declan Rice did not score an own goal.

Apostle Richard Kwame Owusu predicts Argentina as the champions

Founder of Jelem Chapel International, Apostle Richard Kwame Owusu, predicted that Argentina would defeat Spain in the final to win the World Cup.

He also predicted that France would finish third.

"Argentina and Spain will play in the final, and Argentina will beat Spain to win the World Cup. Spain will become second, and France will be third. So, the young men should bring their tithe to Jelem," he said in a viral sermon.

The prediction proved incorrect.

Spain won the World Cup after defeating Argentina in the final. England finished third, while France placed fourth.

Nana Ayebiafo Jnana predicts Argentina to win



Spiritual leader Nana Ayebiafo Jnana also predicted that Argentina would win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"Let me give you a clue about the World Cup. Argentina, Spain and France will be the finalists of the 2026 World Cup, and Argentina will win," he said.

His prophecy also failed, as Spain emerged champions.

The prophecy that came to pass

Prophet Eric Boahen Uche predicts Spain's World Cup triumph

Despite his incorrect prediction that Ghana would lose all its group-stage matches, Prophet Eric Boahen Uche accurately predicted that Spain would win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He made two major football prophecies ahead of the tournament

1.Ghana would lose all three of its group-stage matches.

2.Spain would win the World Cup.

While the first prediction proved false, the second came to pass as Spain defeated Argentina in the final to lift the trophy.
