Accra, Aug 5, GNA - The first ever Zongo Soccer Championship hits Bukom and its environs on Wednesday, August 6 at the Mantse Agbonaa Park, James Town. More than 10 clubs will be competing in the event for the sole ticket to represent the community at the regional championship later in the year. Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, Chief Executive Officer of Krypton Ghana Limited, the organizers told GNA Sports that the event is geared towards radically changing the long-held perception of the Zongo as a citadel of crime and to complement the nation's efforts at using sports as a key tool to eradicate poverty, promote peace and enhance development. He said the response towards the novelty event has been impressive and called for the support of all to enhance the expected goals. Twenty eight Zongo Communities within the Greater Accra Region are competing in the championship which seeks to showcase the "Zongo" as a haven for talents. Winners at the local level are entitled to 50 Ghana Cedis. Accra New Town, Alajo, Abelenkpe, Darkuman, Abeka, Akweteman, Adabraka, Kwashieman and Sabon Zongo have all selected their representatives for the finals scheduled for the El-Wak Stadium in October.
