Accra - The Black Queens of Ghana, who have been in camp for several weeks preparing for their African Women`s Cup final eliminator against Congo decamped after fire gutted the room of skipper Adjoa Bayor at their C.K. Gyamfi Sports College camp at Winneba in the Central Region.
The early morning fire destroyed everything in the room, including the personal effects of the Queens skipper before members of the Black Starlets who are also camped at the Sports College quenched it.
Narrating her ordeal, Bayor said she got up early to join her colleagues for a morning devotion in another room.
She said their prayers were interrupted by shouts from members of the Starlets who discovered smoke coming out of her room and switched off the main switch in the block.
The skipper praised the Starlets for their bravery in putting out the fire but regretted that all her belongings in the room were lost in the inferno.
In reaction to the fire scare, head coach Isaac Paha asked the girls to go home for a week before returning to continue with their preparations.
Paha said the break was to give them a psychological therapy because they were devastated on two fronts - by the uncertainty surrounding their match against Congo and the fire scare.
He said morale was getting low since CAF had tried to reschedule their match against the Congolese who failed to turn up for the first let match in Ghana a fortnight ago and the fire outbreak could make matters worse.
While the GFA had demanded qualification for the Queens, CAF had asked the two countries to arrange to re-fix a new date for the match. The GFA had however protested against the CAF decision.
