Prisons defeat Armed Forces in Areeba Handball League

Accra, Oct. 29, GNA 96 Prisons Service exhibited strong striking power to defeat Ghana Armed Forces 34-24 at the Week Thirteen of the on-going Areeba Handball League at the Prisons Sports Complex on Friday. The game which was evenly contested saw both teams at par until the Prisons took advantage of their home support to take a slim lead of 14-12 at the end of the first half.

Cheered on by the vociferous home fans, Prisons led in attack by Junior National star Hillary Mills, who emerged as the man of the match lifted up their game in the second half to ensure they carried the day while last minute efforts by Jacob Asare, Frank Yeboah and Innocent Denutsni of the Armed Forces to redeem their image and the scores failed to achieve the desired results.


Mr Saka Acquaye, General Secretary of the Handball Association in a release copied to the GNA Sports said other results of the Week were; Ghana Navy beat Future Stars 24-18, Asomdwe Club were put on track by Fire Service with a 42-28 score line, Fire Service's Women also atoned of their female counterparts of Asomdwe Women with a 27-20 win with Airforce tying at 28-28 with HOSTAC while Police Service white washed Old Hands with10-0 score line.


The top liner of the Week Fourteen Fixtures are Fire Service clash against Prison Service on Thursday at the Fire Academy, Asomdwe face Police Service on Friday at the Sacred Heart School court, HOSTAC meet Navy on Friday at the Azumah Nelson Complex while on Saturday, Future Stars meet Old Hands at the Prisons Complex with Airforce clashing against Ghana Army at the Burma Camp.

In a related development, University of Ghana (Legon) narrowly beat their counterparts from the University of Cape Coast 20-19 in a friendly return encounter at the Cape Coast campus on Saturday in the male division while in the females clash, University of Ghana again decisioned their counterparts with a 13-9 score line. A football match between the two sides ended goalless.


Meanwhile University of Education (Winneba) will on Monday and Wednesday engage in two friendly matches against Asomdwe and HOSTAC at the Sacred Heart School and the Azumah Nelson Complex. Mr Acquaye said an outstanding match between Ghana Navy and Airforce will take place at the Burma Camp on Tuesday at 3.00pm. 29 Oct. 06
