Accra, Feb 19, GNA - Carl Lokko, head trainer of Bronx Boxing Gym has called on corporate organisations to support the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) league to achieve its desired goals. Lokko said that the event is currently not benefiting from any form of sponsorship from any quarter, which has led to some financial burdens on the organisers.
Speaking to the GNA Sports in Accra last Friday during the maiden edition of the event, Lokko said the championship is meant to keep the amateur boxers very busy and well prepared for future assignments.
"Most opponents our boxers meet at international competitions have about 150-250 fights, which gives them the upper-hand in terms of experience over the Ghanaian who have about 20-25 fights up their sleeves."
The head trainer said the league forms part of the initiative developed to give Ghanaian boxers enough exposure as well as revive the sport, which has experienced a decline in recent years.
Lokko explained that the GAABA is ready to enter into any form of sponsorship agreement with any corporate organisation and gave the assurance of mutual attractive benefits.
The maiden edition, however, saw most of the boxers travelling the full distance of four rounds with the exception of the Light heavyweight contest between Tei Kaizer of the Osu Ultimate Gym and Mawuli Akpalu of the Ashaiman Gym.
Kaizer displaying some fine boxing artistry gave Akpalu series of punches from the onset, which forced the latter onto the canvas in the first round.
Apkalu could not beat the mandatory count, which saw Kaiser being declared winner on a first round knockout.
In the Light flyweight division, Duke Micah was unanimously adjudged victor over Jessy Lartey in an all Fit Square Gym affair. Fredrick Lawson defeated Nii Ofoli Tetteh in the Bantamweight division 5-0 in another all Fit Square Gym encounter, just as Odoi Yemefio of the De Oak's Gym managed a split decision over Bronx Gym's Francis Adams in a Lightweight contest.
Akotoku Gym's Saviour Glago defeated Godwin Aryee of the Liase Gym via a majority win in the Light welterweight division with John Yeboah of Rangers Gym replicating a similar feat over Daniel Munko of the Bronx Gym in the Welterweight division.
The trio of Nii Armah Quaye, Raymond Addo and Ahmed Sasraku were declared winners without throwing a punch as their respective opponents failed to turn up. 19 Feb. 07
