Malawi can not afford to pay Black stars appearance fee
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has given its Malawi counterpart a fright when it demanded a massive 150,000 US dollars appearance fee for a proposed international friendly game against the Flames in June.

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is trying to arrange a build-up match against any of the continental heavyweights in early June as part of the Flames preparations for the 2008 Africa Nations Cup showdown against Morocco's Atlas Lions on June 15, Nation Online of Malawi reported Saturday.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu confirmed the upshot in an interview earlier this week and said the cash-squeezed association is looking at other options because it cannot afford to meet the exorbitant appearance fee.

GFA general secretary Kofi Nsiah said in a telephone interview from Accra that their marketing agents Global Sports Management (GSM) would demand not less than the money as appearance fee for the star-studded Black Stars to travel to Malawi for the friendly match.

GMS is a leading international sports management and marketing company. It is also a FIFA licensed match agency.

Ghana's reputation has grown by leaps and bounds especially because of their exploits at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany where they were the only African team to reach the last 16 to set up a date with Brazil. They looked like veterans of the competition-enchanting fans around the world with their own brand of quick, free-flowing football.

Apart from Ghana, other continental heavyweights like Nigeria, Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Morocco, Cameroon, South Africa and Mali also demand appearance fee to cover the costs of inviting their foreign contingents.
