Accra, Dec 4, GNA - Christian bodies in the country have pledged their support for the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 26th MTN African Cup of Nations, Ghana 2008, towards hosting a successful event. Reverend Kofi Owusu, General Secretary of the Bible Society of Ghana (BSG) who announced this on Tuesday during a press launch of the 'Christian Involvement towards the January 20 to February 10 Championship', said the Christian community will contribute effectively to the hosting of a better tourney.
He said the collaboration has led to the BSG in conjunction with churches and other Christian organisations settling on the theme "The Ultimate Goal (TUG)" as they seek to play vital role in the successful organisation of the three-week soccer fiesta.
Rev Owusu explained that the theme was an initiative of the International Sports Coalition with a vision of providing a platform for the Christian community to serve and share in partnership with other organisations during the Ghana 2008 African Cup of Nations.
"We will seek the various programmes and events to let players, officials and fans know that the word of God is relevant to their needs."
The General Secretary mentioned Chaplaincy, distribution of Scripture materials, sports clinics, Kids games, church services, Large Screen Hosting and musical festivals among others as planned activities for the Championship at all the four venues of Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi and Tamale.
The event, according to Rev. Owusu is being partnered by the Christian Council of Ghana, Pentecostal Council, National Association of Charismatic Churches, Youth for Christ, Ghana Fellowship of Evangelical Students and international agencies such as Sports Outreach (South Africa), Ambassador in Sports, International Sports Coalition, African Sports Network and Athletes in Action International. He advised that tournament should not be seen for its entertainment value alone but spiritual as well.
"I invite all well meaning Christians to join hands in contributing to make Ghana 2008 a transforming experience that would leave a legacy for posterity unborn," Rev Owusu appealed.
Most Reverend Dr Robert Aboagye Mensah, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church said Ghana 2008 can be used as a major opportunity to share the word of God with the over one million fans expected in the country.
Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) noted that the combination of physical and spiritual aspects of any event was crucial to achieving success in every field of endeavour. He appealed for prayers and support for the Black Stars in their quest to win a record equalling fifth title next year.
