Ishmael Addo scored a hat trick to push his season's tally to 20 and send Accra Hearts of Oak 10 points clear on top of the league table in a 3-1 thrashing of Obuasi Adansiman at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Hearts are now on 58 points while their closest challengers, Kumasi Asante Kotoko remain on 48 as they lost 0-1 in a local derby to King Faisal. Ishmael struck first in the 41st minute when he finished off a pass from Charles Taylor who had waltzed his way through Adansiman defenders.
He scored the second four minutes into the second half when he powered a header into the net after Don Bortey had made a great run from the right and provided him with an incisive pass.
Then in the 80th minute, the defending goal king consolidated Hearts lead with a right-footed shot from the six-yard box.
Adansiman got their consolation through Hope Leveh who thumped in from close range in injury time. The visitors had referee Gyan Otoo turning down what appeared to be a genuine penalty appeal in the 79th minute, when one of their attackers was upended in the penalty area by Hearts right back Dan Oppong.
Hearts dominated play but missed over a dozen scoring chances, particularly in the early stages of the game as Emmanuel Osei Kuffuor fluffed a fine opportunity when Bortey provided him with a great pass, 40 seconds into the game.
Bortey also messed up with a fine opportunity in the second minute and blew another away in the ninth after a good through ball from Addo, while Charles Taylor chickened out in the 14th, 16th and 18th minutes to deny Hearts a wider margin.
Faisal shock Kotoko
A 71st minute volley by substitute Frank Osei gave Alhaji Grunsah’s King Faisal a 1-0 victory over Kumasi Asante Kotoko in their local derby Star Premier league match yesterday.Both teams swung into action giving no room from any formalities immediately Accra based Class one referee J. Wellington whistled for hostilities to begin, and by the sixth minute, the two goalkeepers Louis Quainoo for Kotoko and Sam Okyere for Faisal, had been called into action on more than three occasions each, and had passed the test to the admiration of the supporters.
It was Michael Osei who first called Okyere to duty with a low grounder which could have beaten any ordinary goalkeeper, but Okyere dived full length to grab the ball firmly, and when Quainoo also coolly collected Kwabena Opoku’s goal-bound shot a minute later, the battle line was drawn for an uncompromising game.
In the 32nd minute, Okyere came to the rescue of King Faisal by punching Michael Osei’s bullet to corner which was wasted to end the half.
In the 54th minute, Shilla Alhassan managed to disorganise the Faisal defence, but as the Kotoko fans rose to greet his goal bound shot, the ball hit the side post, and bounced back into play to the relief of King Faisal.
When Faisal also had their chance in the 71st minute, Frank Osei did not make any mistake about it and coolly lobbed the ball into the far corner of the net for the only goal of the afternoon.
It was Kwabena Opoku who initiated the attack at the right flank. He beat two defenders before floating a lovely volley that hit the post and bounced back into play.
Osei who was hovering around, connected the rebound to give King Faisal a breather.
Gt. Oly fall at Obuasi
A Feeling of expetency and excitement ran through Goldfields fans when their idol club scored a goal in each half to beat visiting Olympics 2-0 at the Len Clay Stadium yesterday.Worse for the visitors, their substitute, David Amoako who came on for Isaac Amponsah in the 70th minute was marched off by Tarkwa-based referee T. R. K. Atiffu.
David in a rough tackle on Owusu Ansah fell down with the victim but as he got up first, he stamped Ansah on the turf.
Referee Atiffu’s performance was sub-standard yesterday. He allowed players to rough tackle each other.
At one stage, Olympics’ David Sarkodie nearly went into coma, lying prostrate on the turf after a collision with a Goldfields’ player in the 66th minute.
But for the timely intervention of Goldfields’ Kofi Amoako who rushed in to give the player some resuscitation, it could have been worse.
The incident halted the game for about five minutes. The player was substituted by David Amoako who was soon red-carded and sent off.
Olympics held on to their numerical disadvantage from the 70th minute and tried to equalise but their fortress caved in when Goldfields scored again in the 84th minute.
Slippery Ofosu ‘Tico’ Amoah who tapped in a pass raced deep to the far right end of the field with the ball. He beat his markers and just at the edge of the box, sent a cross to Isaac Boakye to head home the second goal.
• Liberty Professionals of Dansoman moved further away from the relegation zone when they beat third placed Dawu Youngsters 2-0 in their 25th week Star Premier League match at the Accra Stadium last Saturday.
Ablade Morgan and David Boateng scored for Liberty in each half respectively.
