There has been a sudden spate of missed open goals in recent weeks, so we thought it was time to compile a top 10 of the worst of all time.
Here are some very recent candidates:
• Jakub "Kuba" Blaszczykowski, Dortmund against Freiburg: beautiful ball past the advancing goalkeeper, Kuba has only to run on to the ball and pop it into the net ...
• Fahad Khalfan against Uzbekistan: He's done the hard bit, the goalkeeper has inexplicably leapt over the ball, so why does he decide to hit it with the outside of his left foot from there?
• Alan Gatagov, Lokomotiv Moscow v Sibir: it's a bit of a scramble, but he really must score ...
And some not-so-recent ones:
• Ronnie Rosenthal, Liverpool v Aston Villa. Again, he's done the hard part, so how come the bar gets in the way?
• Rocky Baptiste, Harrow Borough v Waltham Abbey: aka, the Rocky Baptiste Horror Show.
